L20 TUTORING PATTERNS - fill-in prompt templates AI allowed - keep a record

Before you use any of these on work that someone else sets the rules for
(a course, a certification programme, an employer), check THOSE rules.
This course allowing it does not mean they allow it. If they say no, do
not use it there.

Fill in every [bracket]. Paste the source material where it says to. Any
model works. Record every session in L20_tutoring_log.csv.

The rule for all four: YOU do the retrieval. If you read an answer before
you tried, it was an answer key, not a tutor.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
PATTERN 1 Generate practice problems
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am learning [subject]. I am on [topic].
Here is a worked example from my textbook:
[paste one worked example]

Write [number] new problems of the same type, at the same difficulty.
Vary the numbers and the wording. Do NOT include answers or solutions.
After the problems, stop.

How to use it: first check that each problem is the same type as the
worked example, and drop any that is not. Work the rest closed-book.
Then check your SETUP against the textbook's worked example. Do not
ask the model for answers: you will glance at them, and they can be
wrong. The textbook's method is your check.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
PATTERN 2 A hint of a stated size
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am working this problem and I am stuck:
[paste the problem]
Here is my work so far:
[paste or type your work]

Give me ONE hint, hint [1, 2 or 3]. Do not solve it.
Hint 1: tell me which idea or principle applies, nothing more.
Hint 2: tell me the first step to take, but not the result of it.
Hint 3: point to the specific line in my work where I went wrong
and say what kind of mistake it is, without fixing it.
If my work so far is correct, say so and give no hint.

How to use it: always ask for hint 1 first. Try again before asking
  for hint 2.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
PATTERN 3 Explain my reasoning back to me
------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am going to explain [concept] in my own words. Do not rewrite my
explanation. Instead:
  1. Quote back any sentence that is wrong or vague.
  2. For each, ask me one question that would expose the problem.
  3. Do not give me the correct explanation.
My explanation:
[type your explanation from memory, book closed]

How to use it: answer its questions from memory, then open the book.
The book settles any disagreement, not the model.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
PATTERN 4 Quiz me
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Quiz me on [topic] using only the material below.
[paste notes or a section of the reading]

Ask one question at a time. Wait for my answer. Tell me if I am right
using only the pasted material, and quote the line that settles it.
Mix easy and hard questions. After [number] questions, list the ones I
missed. Do not ask about anything not in the pasted material.

How to use it: answer without looking at your notes. Check any
"you are right/wrong" verdict against the quoted line yourself.
